Sick certs for work — what to expect online
Need a sick cert for work or college? This guide explains when Irish employers ask for a medical certificate, what a video GP can and cannot certify, and how GPLine’s process works. Certificates are issued only after a genuine consultation — never guaranteed at booking.
How online sick certs work in Ireland
You book a video consultation, speak to an IMC-registered doctor, and — if clinically appropriate — receive a PDF medical certificate by email the same day. The cert shows the doctor’s name and registration number.
Irish employers and colleges typically accept properly issued medical certificates from registered GPs. GPLine does not issue certs without assessing you first.
When to book
Book when you are unwell and need documentation for your employer, college or insurer — and your condition can be assessed safely by video.
- Flu, viral illness or infection affecting your ability to work
- Migraine or severe headache preventing attendance
- Gastroenteritis or similar short-term illness
- Injury where you cannot attend but do not need emergency care

- GPLine certificates are issued by Medical Council of Ireland–registered GPs and are widely accepted. Your employer’s policy is their own — the cert includes the doctor’s IMC details for verification.
- Can I get a sick cert without a video call?
- No. A genuine doctor–patient consultation is required before any certificate is issued.
