Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about online GP consultations in Ireland — booking, pricing, prescriptions, sick certs and privacy.

About the service

What is GPLine?

GPLine is an Irish online doctor service. We connect you with GPs registered with the Medical Council of Ireland through secure video consultations for everyday medical care — advice, prescriptions, sick certs and referrals, where clinically appropriate.

Is GPLine available throughout Ireland?

Yes — nationwide, from cities to rural areas. All you need is a phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection.

Are your doctors really Irish-registered?

Yes. Every doctor is registered with the Medical Council of Ireland. You can verify any doctor at medicalcouncil.ie.

Is an online consultation as good as seeing my GP in person?

For many everyday conditions, yes — and it is more convenient. For anything needing physical examination or urgent care, it is not, and our doctors will tell you so and direct you appropriately.

Booking & appointments

How quickly can I see a doctor?

Most patients get a same-day appointment. Evening and weekend slots are often available.

How do I book?

Choose a time on the Book Appointment page, tell us briefly what you need help with, and pay securely by card. Your video link arrives by email. No app to install — consultations run in your browser.

Do I need to install an app?

No — consultations run in your web browser on phone, tablet or computer.

Pricing & payment

How much does a consultation cost?

The exact fee is shown clearly when you book — the price you see is the price you pay. Prescriptions, certs and referral letters (where clinically appropriate) are included. There are no subscriptions or hidden fees. Medication itself is paid to your pharmacy separately.

Are there any hidden fees or subscriptions?

No. GPLine is pay-per-consultation only. The only separate cost is medication itself, paid to your pharmacy as normal.

Can I claim it back on insurance?

Many Irish health insurance plans cover part of GP/telehealth fees depending on your policy — you receive a claim-ready receipt. GP fees may also qualify for tax relief via Revenue’s Med 1 process.

Prescriptions & medication

Can the doctor prescribe medication?

Yes — where clinically appropriate after your consultation, prescriptions are sent electronically to your chosen Irish pharmacy. Booking does not guarantee a prescription.

What medications will you never prescribe?

Controlled drugs, sedatives, sleeping tablets or any medication with a risk of dependence. Fees are not refunded where a booking is made to request these.

Can you prescribe antibiotics?

Where genuinely indicated, yes — our GPs follow HSE antimicrobial prescribing guidance.

Sick certs & documents

Can I get a medical certificate online?

Yes — after a consultation, where the GP considers it appropriate, your cert is emailed the same day.

Will employers and colleges accept it?

Yes — it is a standard medical certificate issued by an IMC-registered doctor whose registration can be verified with the Medical Council.

Can I get referral letters?

Yes — for specialists, counselling or testing, where appropriate.

Privacy, emergencies & limits

Is my consultation private?

Yes. Video calls are encrypted, records are stored on EU servers under GDPR, regulated by the Irish Data Protection Commission, and nothing is shared without your consent except where law requires.

What can’t be treated online?

Emergencies, conditions requiring physical examination or immediate testing, and controlled-medication requests. When online care isn’t suitable, our doctors will direct you to the right service.

What should I do in an emergency?

Call 999 or 112 immediately, or go to your nearest Emergency Department. GPLine is not an emergency service. If you are in a mental-health crisis, call 999/112, contact Samaritans free on 116 123, or text HELLO to 50808.
